IFOAM EU Group seminar sessions at BioFach 2013


Also this year IFOAM EU Group will be present at BioFach 2013 with several workshops and seminar sessions with topics ranging from GMOs, EU Organic Regulation, US/EU Equivalence, organic wine, climate change, rural development and the sustainability challenge.

15.00 – 15.45: How to deal with pesticide residue in organic products: guidelines.

The EU organic regulations don't detail the level of pesticides tolerated in organic food or how to deal with them. Member States,and certification bodies around Europe set their own level, thatdiffer from region to region.. What is the responsibility of the operator? what is the role of the certification body? The recently revised guidelines prepared bu the IFOAM EU group provide guideance to all parts of the organic sector.

10.00 – 11.30: The review of the EU Organic Regulation
(Copenhagen Room)

In 2012 the European Commission announced a review of theCouncil Regulation (EC) No 834/2007.The three main steps of the process are the Report to the Council on the application of the organic regulation, presented in May 2012, the impact assessment, started in Autumn 2012 with stakeholder consultation, and the evaluation of the regulation subcontracting an external body. At the end of 2013 a legal proposal to amend the organic regulation can be expected. The main topics are the scope of the Regulation, control and import activities, flexibility and GMOs.

12.00 – 12.45: One year after US/EU equivalency agreement: experiences, challenges and outlook
(Copenhagen Room)

During the last Biofach 2012, an organic equivalence agreement between the two biggest organic markets in the world, US and EU, was signed. Besides the big advantages for involved certified operators , previously overburdened by papers, additional inspections and costs, some concern has been expressed by the European stakeholders.

13.00 – 13.45: EU implementing rules: organic poultry, greenhouse, feed and production inputs
(Prague Room)

Specific areas of the organic production rules laid on in the Commission Implementing Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 need to be further developed. Organic production in poultry and greenhouse, feed and production inputs are examples. What happened during the 2012 and what is still under discussion.

14.00 – 15.30: Climate Change: organic strategies to meet a global challenge

The workshop will update on the global IFOAM climate change campaign and make the link to action and policies with a focus on EU member states: What policy frameworks are currently discussed on EU level with an emphasis on climate change adaptation and mitigation in agriculture? How can organic food and farming be brought in as a solution? What are the strategic points and timelines? How to campaign for organic as a best climate change solution?

15.00-17:00: TP Organics Workshop: Preparing the organic and agroecological sector for the new EU research and innovation policy

Organic farming and environment sustainability are strongly related and the organic sector asks for specific rules on the environmental impact of the operators, in particular processors, certified according to the  Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007. IFOAM EU Group already published its proposal in 2012.

After years of discussions, at the end the term "organic" can be today associated to the wine. In fact the Implementing Regulation (EU) No 203/2012 took into force and the first vintage was carried out in summer-autumn 2012.In this way European Organic Regulations cancel the gap existing with other big organic market as US and Canada

The pressure on the organic food chain is increasing: GMO contamination is a source of costs. The workshop develops strategies on how to keep GMO out of the food chain in cost-efficient ways and formulates demands to policy makers.
