IFOAM EU highlights the role of organic farming in times of climate change during Green Week
Green Week 2009 (June 23-26) was devoted to ‘Climate Change: Act and Adapt’ and the IFOAM EU Group was amongst the selected few exhibitors  to once more participate in this event in Charlemagne Building, in the institutional quarters of Brussels.

This week-long conference assembly with an additional expo of organisations and businesses was organised by DG Environment. It provided an opportunity for information exchanges and promoting environmental awareness among non-governmental organisations, businesses, various levels of government, EU-institutions, media and the public (see more at http://greenweek2009.alligence.com/home.html).

IFOAM EU Group presented the organic principles and highlighted the key role that organic agriculture can play in climate change mitigation. The staff of the IFOAM EU Group were approached by many participants from the EU institutions, public authorities, scientific community but also by international medias and thus took the opportunity to create awareness on these particular issues. This was achieved by distributing our most recent dossiers and information sheets, and by discussing and persuading participants on how organic farming can contribute to mitigating climate change.

IFOAM EU Group also attracted participants’ attention by an 'organic quiz' which highlighted the impact of consumption patterns on greenhouse gas emissions. For example, we promoted and demonstrated local, seasonal organic produce by presenting the concept of purchasing a vegetable box-scheme, which was convincing to many participants. This year, the EU Commission decided to only serve organic food during Green Week which was a positive development to recent years.

The PowerPoint presentation presented in our booth during Green Week is also accessible by clicking here.
