Soil Directive

IFOAM EU Group Letter

The IFOAM EU Group underlined its support for an EU wide protection for soil in a letter sent to the German Presidency and the President of the European Parliament On April 16, 2007.

Soil has always been the starting point for organic farming and the foundation of organic farm management. Therefore, for organic farmers, the care for the soil has always been at the heart of their concern.

Background

The Sixth Community Environment Action Programme (6th EAP) from 2002, required a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection as one of seven thematic strategies.

In April 2002, the Commission published a Communication "Towards a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection" (COM(2002)179) with the outline for the development of a Soil Thematic Strategy.

In September 2006, the European Commission adopted the Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection (COM(2006)231 final), whose main objectives are the prevention of further degradation of soil and preservation of its functions and the restoration of degraded soil.

The Strategy is composed of a Communication from the Commission, a proposal for a Framework Directive and an Impact Assessment.
