Promoting sustainable food systems and biodiversity under CAP 2020

Full project title: "Promoting sustainable food systems and biodiversity under CAP 2020"

Duration: 1 September 2011 to 31 December 2012

Main funder: MAVA Foundation (http://en.mava-foundation.org/)

Contact staff at IFOAM EU Group: Stephen Meredith

Main objective

The general objective is to contribute to a green Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as an EU policy framework that shapes agriculture to conserve biodiversity and manage natural resources sustainably.

Activities

The IFOAM EU Group will engage in the political discussion on the CAP reform to push for a significantly greener CAP. More ecological sustainability in the CAP can be reached through greening requirements for direct payments, the promotion of sustainable farm systems - organic farming and HNV farming - that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and make sustainable use of natural resources; in combination with enhanced spending for targeted agro-environmental measures.

In the first phase, the project focuses on the goal to advocate for a sustainable EU policy framework in the co-decision process between the EU institutions through coordinating a position on the CAP legislative proposals, face to face meetings with core policy makers, a major public conference, press work and policy recommendations. The second project phase focuses on the national and regional implementation of the CAP, in this phase, a manual for best greening practices and Rural Development measures to promote sustainable farming and biodiversity conservation will be produced and serve as a key tool for national lobby activities of IFOAM EU members; moreover IFOAM EU provides advice and coordinates its national member organisations in their lobby activities. Throughout the project, IFOAM EU will actively coordinate positions, deliver information to its members and provide a platform for exchange and discussion; furthermore it will strengthen its alliances with a broader group of civil society organisations in order to join forces that push for a significant shift towards sustainable farming.
