IFOAM member organizations may create national, regional or interest based groups.
There are two categories of such groups: • Regional or national groups, where members are organized according to geographic location. • Interest or sector specific groups, where members are organized according to field of activity or interest. These groups are a part of IFOAM structures and should not be seen as independent entities.
Initiatives are IFOAM member based groups that have been constituted as interim groups and are working towards obtaining IFOAM endorsement. The creation of an initiative is a starting point for the building of an IFOAM Internal Body. It is formed starting from 3 or more IFOAM members in a region, on their own initiative. The initiative links up with the IFOAM Head Office and World Board and works towards obtaining official IFOAM approval.
Currently, ASAFI (Association des Adhérents Français d’IFOAM) has this status.
