OGS Policies Library
The IFOAM Organic Guarantee System is regulated by a number of internal IFOAM policies, which are under the responsibility of the IFOAM World Board. You can download the policies by simply clicking the download link.
Policy 42: IFOAM approval of Certification Standards for inclusion in the IFOAM family of organic standards
Policy 42 governs the approval of organic standards and regulations by IFOAM for inclusion in the IFOAM family of organic standards. The IFOAM family of organic standards serves the following purposes:
·Draw the line between organic and non-organic standards, while acknowledging that organic standards may vary depending on local conditions or product specific needs.
·Improve transparency and public understanding about the differences between different organic standards.
·Facilitate equivalence agreements of all kinds between organic standards and regulations, including unilateral, bilateral and multilateral equivalence agreements based on the results of the equivalence assessment with one private international organic reference standard.

Policy 20 on the Revision of IFOAM Norms
The new Policy 20 on the Revision of the IFOAM Norms includes the following former policies (prior to 2010):
-Policy 60: Revision of IBS inputs lists and
-Policy 61: Norms consultation.
The purpose of the new policy 20 is to ensure that the decision making regarding the IFOAM Norms (IFOAM Standard, IFOAM Standards Requirements and IFOAM Accreditation Requirements) is based on open consultations and that the decision making power lies with the IFOAM General Assembly.

Policy 28: Interpretation of IFOAM Norms
This policy defines the procedures for interpretations of the IFOAM Standard and the IFOAM Accreditation Requirements in relation to the IFOAM and System Accreditation processes.

Policy 41: Use of the IFOAM Standard
This policy describes the conditions and processes under which IFOAM will manage the use of the IFOAM Standard by clients and other possible users.
Please note, that this policy has no scope limitation and will be effective as soon as the IFOAM Standard is published by IFOAM.

Policy 43: Use of the Global Organic Mark
The purpose of this policy is to describe the conditions and processes under which operators can use the IFOAM Global Organic Mark on their products and the clients can sign contracts with IFOAM for the use of this mark.
This policy has no scope limitation and will be effective as soon as the Global Organic Mark service is available.

Terms of Reference of the new OGS Committees
The OGS functions with the help of 3 technical committees: the IFOAM Standard Committee, working on the development of the IFOAM Standard, the IFOAM Standards Requirements Committee, working on the IFOAM Standards Requirements- COROS and on the approval of standards in the IFOAM Family of Standards, and the IFOAM Accreditation Requirements Committee, working on the development of the IFOAM Accreditation Requirements (formerly known as IFOAM Accreditation Criteria). The Terms of Reference of these committees are also OGS policies under the responsibility of the IFOAM World Board.

Policy 12: Use of the IFOAM Seal This Policy has not undergone changes due to the OGS revision. The purpose of this policy is to define the correct use of the IFOAM name, the IFOAM logo and the IFOAM seal and the procedure to be followed in case of abuse of the IFOAM name, logo or seal.
