MASIPAG Farmers Guarantee System |

 |
MASIPAG is a farmer-led network of people's organizations, non-government organizations and scientists working towards the sustainable use and management of biodiversity through farmers' control of genetic and biological resources, agricultural production and associated knowledge. MASIPAG runs a PGS called the MASIPAG Farmers Guarantee System (MFGS). This system was coined to give credence to the farmers who man the Internal Quality Control System team, serve as Internal Inspectors, quality control officers and the approving committee. The MASIPAG standards are drafted by the farmers themselves with the guidance of the staff from the national and regional secretariats of MASIPAG.
The MFGS aims to empower the resource-poor farmers. Specifically, it aims to:
1. Strengthen farmers control over the selling of their produce while improving productivity and sustainability and achieving food self-sufficiency at local level;
2. Ensure integrity and quality of MASIPAG organic products;
3. Set prices in the spirit of mutual benefits;
4. Manage self distribution, by the producers;
5. Be democratic/transparent in the group activities; and
6. Take much interest in studying issues related to organic agriculture.
MFGS' core principles are:
1. Food security first, only surplus is sold
2. FARMER & PO-led
3. Diversification of crops, livestock and products
4. Local market first
5. Reduce market layers
6. Develop RELATIONS with CONSUMERS
As of 2007, MFGS had seven (7) pilot people's organization (PO) and the target is to expand into 60 more POs until 2010.
