Mainstream Organic Agriculture at Rio+20
Twenty years on from the original Earth Summit IFOAM will be back in Rio together with 130 plus heads of state with a comprehensive and integrated advocacy program aimed at positioning OA and the global organic movement at the center of sustainable development (SD) policies and initiatives. IFOAM is coordinating over 20 leaders from the global organic movement in Rio and from June 12 to June 22 they will be leading, contributing and participating in a diverse and strategic range of events and negotiations at Rio+20 with key stakeholders both within and outside the official UNCSD conference. IFOAM’s emphasis is on awareness building and establishing and strengthening partnerships both within and outside the organic movement in order to assist stakeholders around the world in the transition to sustainable agriculture and food and nutrition security.

IFOAM Rio+20 Calendar of Highlights
June 12 IFOAM side event, lead by Urs Niggli of FiBL at the International Council for Science’s Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for SD; ‘Setting the Post Rio Knowledge & Science Agenda for Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication’ which will demonstrate the science required in the global transition to sustainable and inclusive agriculture and food security.
June 15 IFOAM’s official UNCSD Side Event ‘Mainstreaming Organic Agriculture as a Means of Implementation’ chaired by IFOAM Executive Director Markus Arbenz, featuring keynote speeches from the Deputy-Director General for Agriculture & Rural Development at the European Commission and the Director for Sustainable Development at the USDA and a panel of implementation partners including WFP, UNCCD, IFRC and IFOAM member Avalon Foundation where IFOAM will announce its Rio+20 Voluntary Commitments.
June 13 to June 15 IFOAM participation in the final Rio+20 preparatory conference in Rio where negotiations on the Rio+20 outcome document will carry on from where they left off in NYC on June 2.
June 15 INOFO President Moises Quispe speaking at the Peoples Summit Debate on ‘Agriculture and the Environmental Crisis in the World’.
June 16 IFOAM Advocacy Manager Robert Jordan speaking at the Peoples Summit Debate on ‘International Policies to Promote Agro-ecological Development’.
June 16 to June 19 IFOAM participation in the Civil Society Sustainable Development Thematic Dialogues organized by the Brazilian Government as well as participation in the official Rio+20 negotiations which are sure to be going on right up to the commencement of the high level segment on June 20.
June 17 IFOAM and INOFO Presidents Andre Leu and Moises Quispe speaking on ‘the Economics of Land Degradation’ and the ‘World Global Soil’ panels respectively at the joint UNCCD, EU and FAO Land Day in the Rio Conventions Pavilion.
June 18 Two IFOAM Learning Events at the high profile Agriculture and Rural Development Day with partners Biovision, WFP and the Public Health Institute on Sustainable Intensification chaired by Vandana Shiva which features Sue Edwards and the award winning Tigray Project in Ethiopia and a parallel event on Reshaping Food Access & Diets.
June 19 IFOAM’s official UNCSD SD Learning Course; “Organic Agriculture -Locally Driven Solutions to Global Priorities” chaired by IFOAM President Andre Leu featuring a 30 min speech and Q&A with the Prime Minster of Bhutan followed by ‘organic green economy’ case studies from India, Ethiopia, Brazil and Peru that demonstrate how OA addresses 10 of the Rio+20 priority themes; Food Security, Land Degradation, Water, Climate Change, Mountains, Gender Equality, Biodiversity, Sustainable Production & Consumption, Cities and Green Jobs & Social Inclusiveness.
June 20 to June 22 IFOAM President Andre Leu’s participation in the high level segment of Rio+20 including opening and closing plenaries and the parallel high-level ministerial round tables aimed.

June 21 IFOAM side event on ‘Organic Mountain Livelihoods’ at the Mountain Pavilion lead by Patricia Flores.
Speech by IFOAM President Andre Leu at the European Commission’s main Roo+20 agriculture event; "Agriculture – The Way Towards Sustainability and Inclusiveness" that features keynotes from the EU Commissioners for Agriculture and for Development and the Brazilian Minister of Agrarian Development.
