Agriculture and Food Security towards Full Sustainability (AFSP)

The AFSP project was a three-year project funded by Hivos, after the termination of the IFOAM Growing Organic projects. Its goal was to encourage the uptake of Organic Agriculture practices as an instrument to address food security, climate change adaptation, biodiversity and sustainable resource management in the global South. The program accompanied IFOAM’s strategic planning and supported core activities targeted at developing countries.

Through AFSP IFOAM developed its capability to spread effective extension messages and to provide sustainable services to stakeholders in low-income countries. The project included the initiation of the IFOAM Organic Leadership Course for capacity building of local leaders from the South, the creation of internet platforms to facilitate the South’s access to the global organic community, the promotion of PGS and the empowerment of initiatives in the South sharing IFOAM’s values through information, alliances and advocacy skills to raise their voice and support ‘poor people first’ and ‘ecosystem based’ agriculture strategies resulting in greater sustainability both inside and outside the organic movement.
