Starting Dot Wins “.bio” Domain

On 13 February 2014 IFOAM's partner Starting Dot was offered a contract by ICANN (the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - the entity that "runs" the internet) to enable Starting Dot to administer the new global top-level domain “.bio”. Starting Dot has partnered with IFOAM to ensure that “.bio” is of benefit to the organic movement, and protects and advances the interests of all kinds of organic operations in line with the Principles of Organic Agriculture. This means that the Internet extension “.bio” will become available in the near future. The “.bio” extension is an alternative to more typical extensions like ".com" or ".net", and allows companies and organizations to find a new space for their name in an internet url. IFOAM heads the Policy Advisory Committee for Starting Dot for all matters pertaining to “.bio” to help assure this new domain is a boon for the organic movement.
