The Congress will be held in the city of Modena: the plenary sessions will be held in a single venue in the city center, while the separate thematic modules will be located in buildings situated in the historic center. A 10-minute walk separates the plenary session from the locations hosting the specific themes, thus participants will be able to enjoy the city’s beauty by strolling along the picturesque streets. Modena is a city rich in cultural history; during the rule of Este, it was the capital, and its main square has been declared UNESCO World Heritage for the beauty and value of its Romanesque monuments.
Vignola and Castelvetro, in the Modenese hills, will host the Conference on Organic Fruits and the Conference on Organic Wine and Viticulture on June 16th-17th. The location is famous for quality fruit growing, in particular for its cherries and plums, as well as for the production of Lambrusco Grasparossa grapes. The Vignola Fortress (kindly made available for the occasion by the Vignola Mutual Savings Bank Foundation) will be one of the settings for meetings, where ideas from the past can merge with innovations of the present.
Carpi, located only 15 km from Modena, is a city known as one of the Italian capitals of textile production and clothing. The Conference on Organic Textiles will be hosted there, in the beautiful Saint Rocco’s Oratory and in the Municipal Theatre.
Modena: mosaic of color
Landscapes and passions, places, myths and ancient flavors of excellent food and wine: the territory of Modena offers several itineraries to all those who are looking for hospitality and genuineness. The morphological division between the lowland and the mountain area creates a balance. History, culture, nature, sports and well-being, typical and organic products creating a mosaic of beauty, legends and local customs... this is the province of Modena. Those who know it have no doubt: the multitude of emotions it brings forth, together with its men and women, a universe of people with extraordinary inventive skills, make it a unique and unrepeatable land!
Flavor
Take a part of tradition, a constant commitment to protect genuine products, a love for good and high quality ingredients, and you get the recipe for Modenese cooking. The Modenese table is sumptuously laid with every type of delicacy: Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, traditional balsamic vinegar, prosciutto ham, lambrusco wines, all certified DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) or IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) and produced according to the strictest food safety regulations that guarantee their tastiness and quality. It is a real culture of good food that carefully looks after organic and quality productions, which are well known and appreciated for their originality and respect of age-old traditions.
Culture
The province of Modena is a land of nobility, castles and artists, as well as extraordinary landscapes, history, art and museums. Beautiful and original, the Modena Cathedral is an important Romanesque monument. Along with the Ghirlandina Tower and Piazza Grande, they belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The fortresses and medieval castles hold many surprises, immersed in a natural and beautiful setting. Here, you can come across more than fifty museums, characterised by their various collections and their strong ties with the land.
Environment
Enjoy the diversity and richness of landscapes in the lowland and in the Modenese Apennine Mountains. Explore and feel their essence, walking down “perfumed and colored” paths...from the itineraries along the waterways and faunal oases to springs; from the vast area of the Frignano Park to the valleys blossoming with Vignola cherries and the vineyards of Castelvetro; from the towering cliffs of Sassi di Roccamalatina to the Natural Reserve of Salse di Nirano and its lunar landscape once created by a volcanic eruption. Travel along ancient bridges and roads to rediscover the taste of travelling and adventure.
Holidays and Sports
Whether on foot, bicycle, horseback or even riding a donkey, you can enjoy the Modenese territory in many ways. The peaks, valleys and prairies, beautifully green at one time and blinding white at another, become pleasant holiday settings perfect for relaxation and sports. Consorzio ModenaBio 2008, the 16th IFOAM Organic World Congress organizer, will provide participants with leisure activities, events and tours on local production and food systems, as well as all other aspects described above, before, during and after the OWC.
