NürnbergMesse China has already successfully established the international trade fair for organic food and natural products in Shanghai, which now takes place for the fourth time. BioFach China 2009 attracted an encouraging 238 exhibitors and some 10,400 trade visitors. This year’s event also promises a variety of inspiring organic products, conference events and opportunities for networking. |

Organic agriculture is the fastest growing food sector. Over the last ten years, it has grown 15-20 percent annually, while the overall food industry is growing 4-5 percent per year. The organic food supply chain is a consumer driven sector, with a market value of USD 40 billion. Organic production now covers more than 31 million hectares.
In 2007, IFOAM chose the topic “In-between discount and premium: Friend or foe,” and invited key leaders in the organic trade industry to discuss the implications of large-scale conventional businesses entering the organic marketplace. For 2008, IFOAM will continue its leadership role by focusing on “Global Sourcing: An issue of credibility”. |

The Conference held eight Plenary sessions including aspects ranging from seed production, propagation and quality, through harmonization of standards and technical regulations, to economics and biodiversity aspects. The challenging issue of co-existence between organic agriculture and GMOs was also addressed. Two parallel sessions discussed technical and scientific aspects of seed production and seed quality and a Poster Session was held in the FAO Atrium.
In total, 60 presentations and 27 posters gave a broad overview of relevant topics. The Conference Proceedings, consisting of a 188-page publication, were distributed to participants before the start of the Conference. |
