The 16th IFOAM Organic World Congress: Cultivate the Future
The whole of the Modena community will welcome its guests at the end of June 2008.

The program will allow participants not only to attend conferences and modules of interest, but also view how local production and food systems worl. The congress will have several venues, with parallel themed conferences held in locations related to organic production.

The congress will be structure around the Principles of Organic Agriculture, and will address a wide range of issues, including animal production, vegetable corps, cereals and organic sees, training, rural development, GMOs, viticulture, textiles, development policies, markets, bio-energy, comsetics and body care.

IFOAM Trade Symposium 2008 - Global Sourcing
Organic agriculture is the fastest growing food sector. Over the last ten years, it has grown 15-20 percent annually, while the overall food industry is growing 4-5 percent per year. The organic food supply chain is a consumer driven sector, with a market value of USD 40 billion. Organic production now covers more than 31 million hectares.

In 2007, IFOAM chose the topic “In-between discount and premium: Friend or foe,” and invited key leaders in the organic trade industry to discuss the implications of large-scale conventional businesses entering the organic marketplace. For 2008, IFOAM will continue its leadership role by focusing on “Global Sourcing: An issue of credibility”.

The conversation will address both the challenges as well as the opportunities provided by the mainstreaming of organic. This trade symposium will be a pre-BioFach event. BioFach clearly brings the world leaders on organic trade together and provides the ideal environment to hold this important symposium.

The First World Conference on Organic Seed
The Conference held eight Plenary sessions including aspects ranging from seed production, propagation and quality, through harmonization of standards and technical regulations, to economics and biodiversity aspects. The challenging issue of co-existence between organic agriculture and GMOs was also addressed. Two parallel sessions discussed technical and scientific aspects of seed production and seed quality and a Poster Session was held in the FAO Atrium.

In total, 60 presentations and 27 posters gave a broad overview of relevant topics. The Conference Proceedings, consisting of a 188-page publication, were distributed to participants before the start of the Conference.
