FIRST WEST AFRICA SUMMIT ON ORGANIC AGRICULTURE (1st WASUMMIT)

THEME: ORGANIC AGRICULTURE AND THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

BACKGROUND: Organic Agriculture involves the production and handling of food and fibre by exploiting the benefits of ecological cycles, ensuring fairness to all stake holders and excluding the use of synthetic agrochemicals which are harmful to health or the environment.
Awareness on the benefits of organic agriculture is increasing in West Africa.  Nonetheless, the potential of West Africa in organic agriculture remains underexploited. To redress this, there is need for effective networking among West African scientists, farmers, students, policy makers, agro-allied entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.  This is the main aim of the First West Africa Summit on Organic Agriculture (1st WASUMMIT). It is envisaged that by consensus the Summit will develop strategies that will stimulate and sustain ecologically-sound production of adequate and safe food to eradicate poverty and hunger in West Africa.

THE SUMMIT AIMS TO:
1. Disseminate current information, indigenous technologies and competences in organic agriculture in West Africa
2. Provide a forum for sharing experiences among organic agriculture scientists and practitioners in West Africa
3. Enhance international collaboration between Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) and other stakeholders in organic agriculture West Africa and developed countries.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Scientists, students in tertiary Institutions in West Africa
  • International Organic Agriculture groups and Organizations
  • Farmers, International organizations related to food production and Health (FAO, WHO, IFPRI, e.t.c. )
  • other stakeholders.
