Training course: Organic Farmer Course

Funding: The course involves practical training on farms and the students will have a salary according to Danish standards for trainees.
Target groups and admission requirements: The course is targeted at persons interested in organic farming who would like to have practical skills and knowledge to work as skilled labour on organic farms.
The students must already be doing agriculturally related studies in their home countries in order to meet requirements set by Danish immigration authorities for obtaining a visa.
Training objectives: The course focuses on organic farming systems in Northern Europe but with relevance to application and practices generally. The training objectives are to gain practical skills and knowledge in:
- the history, objectives and principles of organic farming
- livestock production
- crop production
- farm machinery
- farm buildings
- agricultural policies and regulation
- farm work safety
- basic accountancy
- introduction to finance and investment
Training program: The training program starts with 5 months of theoretical studies and practical training on the Organic Agricultural College. This is followed by 13 months of practical training on a Danish farm, continued by 4 months of studies back on the college, another 15 months of practical training and, finally, 5 more months of studies on the college.
At the college the varied range of subjects will be taught using various teaching methods such as lectures, exercises and group work. During the practical training a student works as the farmer's assistant where it is expected that he/she participates fully in the farm work.
