The instructors

Leland Daugherty is a graphic designer and illustrator primarily who also has over 10 years of practical strawbale building experience.  He was the builder of Falls Brook Centre’s Straw bale Forest Museum in 1999.  He has since assisted with the construction of a straw bale workshop in Coldstream, NB and a single-family solar-powered straw bale house.  He is currently working on a larger post and beam strawbale in-fill home, which will be one of the projects to work on during the course.

Gabriel Prost has worked in the field of alternative building since 1996.  He has a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Masters of Architecture and has focused on sustainable community-oriented design. He practiced architecture in Oregon, California and is currently working with David Garrett Architects in Halifax. As a builder he has worked on residential and commercial projects in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico ranging from conventional, to cob, timber frame and straw bale building systems. He has facilitated workshops focused on alternative building and was recently a presenter at the International Straw Bale Building Conference.

Kim Thompson has been involved in developing straw bale and earth construction methods for northern climates since 1993. She currently teaches courses in Natural Building at the School of Architecture Dalhousie University, as well as offering consultation, research, education and hands-on building services  through her business, Straw Bale Projects.  Using natural building as a community strengthening tool is integral to  Strawbale Projects’ mandate for creating beautiful, healthy, affordable buildings.  She brings experience in straw bale and earth construction, clay paints and plasters, low impact foundations, round wood construction, and bread ovens. Website: www.naturalbuildings.ca
