Building Capacities on Certification of Organic Agriculture in the Pacific
The project “Building Capacities on Certification of Organic Agriculture in the Pacific” was an IFAD-funded project, implemented by IFOAM, in cooperation with ICEA. The project, focusing on developing regional Organic Agriculture standards, was a first step in IFAD’s long-term involvement in Organic Farming in the Pacific. The project ran from 2006 to 2008.
The project aimed at:
Analyzing the existing situation of Organic Agriculture and Fair Trade productions in the Pacific Islands Countries.
Enabling producers of organic agriculture to obtain the certification of their products at a reduced and affordable cost.
Institutionalizing certification capacity either private or governmental.
Developing a set of regional standards for Organic Agriculture products.
A series of workshops and trainings was conducted in the Pacific region
under this project. Active participation and contribution from local
governments and a close cooperation with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) were key in the successful implementation of the project. Two key documents developed through the project are available for download: The Pacific Organic Standard (French and English) and the Overview of OA in the Pacific.
