The Paldang farmers have in the past two years seen their livelihoods being threatened by the looming ‘Restoration of the 4 Rivers Project’ under which the government wants to turn the farmland into a public park with cycle lanes by 2012, among claims that organic farming was having a negative impact on water quality in the region. Recognizing that organic farming is the best land use for the Paldang region to ensure that the water quality is suitable for drinking, IFOAM openly supports the determined efforts to maintain organic management of the land in Paldang region. Governments in Europe actively encourage farmers to adopt organic methods to guarantee an excellent water quality in catchments that are used for drinking water. Organic farming or organic landscape management are better for the environment and water quality than parks and gardens that use synthetic water soluble fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. The Paldang region is the birthplace of the modern Korean organic agriculture and has therefore a symbolic value for the national and the international organic movements. IFOAM believes that the Paldang landscape should continue to be managed organically so as to showcase best organic practices. In support of the Paldang farmers, IFOAM issued a Declaration of Support for Organic Management of the Paldang Land and encouraged participants of the events to sign the declaration in support of these organic farmers.
