 |
The award promotes the positive aspects of globalization that is not solely aiming for profit maximization, but focuses on the three pillars of sustainability: ecological, social and economic. The OWA will recognize outstanding engagement and achievements in providing creative and high impact solutions in the area of environmental protection and fair livelihoods. It also aims to encourage more involvement for a lovable, worth living future and for peaceful community building.
With these objectives the award will recognize leadership and innovation of organizations, projects and people. Five “finalists” selected from the nominations shall each receive a 2.000 Euro cash prize. Among the finalists, a jury will choose the One World Award winner. The OWA winner will be acknowledged with a winner’s merit statue and a cash prize of 25.000 Euro.
Precisely formulated criteria will allow potential nominees to assess if they qualify. Criteria are built on the objectives and consider significant achievements in the field of ecology and social synergy, contribution to peace and religions’ tolerance, contribution to gender balance and justice and/or technical innovations with positive environmental impacts. Individuals as well as organizations and projects are eligible to apply. Self nominations are also accepted. A second OWA is a Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing a personality, who has been a pioneer and very active person with regard to the objectives of the award. The “Lifetime Achievement Award” prize is the OWA statue but without cash prize. Nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award can come from the public and the jury members. Self nominations are not accepted in this category.
The nomination procedure and details will be available and circulated by mid November 2007 to those who register their interest under e-mail info@rapunzel.de or fax 0049-8330 529-1139. This information and more details can also be found on the OWA webpage www.one-world-award.com which will be operational by the end of October. Nomination deadline (for both categories) is January 4th 2008.
The first OWA is scheduled to be presented in a ceremonial event in conjunction with the IFOAM Organic World Congress in June 2008 (more information: www.ifoam.org ).
The jury panel consists of highly respected international activists and leaders who are already established. Members of the OWA jury are the Alternative Nobel Prize Laureates Vandana Shiva (Indian scientist and activist), Tewolde Egziabher from Ethiopia (Director of the Environmental Protection Agency/”Minister” of Environment), Professor Michael Braungart from Germany (chemist and activist with Greenpeace and also the co-creator of “cradle to cradle” concept), and Josef Wilhelm (the CEO and founder of the Rapunzel company, will represent the award donor). The OWA jury is coordinated by the chair, Bernward Geier, the Director of COLABORA.
Rapunzel (“organic with love”), the pioneer and leading organic company based in Germany is internationally engaged with a history of over 35 years. Inspired by the successful experience of pioneering its fair trade program “Hand in Hand,” Rapunzel has now committed substantial resources for the One World Award.
Josef Wilhelm explained his motivation and reasons for establishing and funding the award “…as not only a matter of the company’s philosophy, but also it is a matter dear to my heart. Influenced and touched in my business life by experiences of conflicts, injustices and disproportions on our earth I want to set with the OWA a sign of encouragement. The OWA will recognize and promote as good examples courageous people and institutions for their dedication and achievements for a peaceful, just and fair living together on our globe.” For more information please visit www.one-world-award.com or contact info@Rapunzel.de
