Supported by a number of donors (Sida; The Oxfam/Novib Biodiversity Fund; Cordaid; Triodos Foundation and Hivos, among others) the overall objective of this project is to achieve a positive image for African organic products and link more African organic producers to international markets, by organizing an Organic Africa Pavilion for BioFach, the largest organic trade fair in the world.
The Africa Pavilion concept was first launched in 2008. The target groups are African exporters and the international organic trade on one side, and development policy makers on the other side. Beneficiaries are tens of thousands of African smallholder farmers. Almost all organic trade from Africa is based on contracted small-holders or cooperatives.
Some of the project´s outcomes:
- general image building for Africa as a supplier of organic products;
- generation of direct business and investments in the organic sector in Africa;
- capacity building and training of exporters and Africa support organizations.
The output has been successful, with good media coverage and big interest from the trade sector, annual participation of at least 70 African companies as exhibitors, organized in country stands, and visited by emerging companies and policy-markers from the target countries.
