The IFOAM PGS Committee

The IFOAM Executive Board in July 2009 approved the TORs of the PGS committee, now a permanent committee within IFOAM structures. On November 2012 the following members have been re-appointed for the committee:

Eva Torremocha (Spain): Eva works as an independent consultant to provide support to different emerging PGS initiatives in Spain and neighboring countries. Eva also maintains strong linkages with the French PGS Nature & Progrès. Eva manages a small subsistence organic farm in Andalusia.

Alice Varon (USA): Alice has been involved with

PGS since 2006 when she became executive director of Certified Naturally Grown. Alice's background in grassroots organizations has helped her expand CNG's membership and operations. In 2010 CNG launched an apiary certification program.

Chris May (New Zealand): Chris is an organic horticulturist and managing director of Bioglobal Consultancy. In 2001-2003, Bioglobal developed “Organic Farm New Zealand”, the national PGS system in New Zealand. Chris is still involved in OFNZ as a certification manager. Chris is also a PGS trainer for IFOAM with experience in Africa, India, South-Asia and the Pacific. biomays@clear.net.nz

Mathew John (India): Mathew has worked with the Keystone PGS in India for the past decade. Mathew is now member of the PGS Organic India Council which he helped to set-up in 2006. mathew@keystone-foundation.org

Janet Villanueva (Peru): Janet is PGS advisor of the National Association of Ecological producers in Peru (ANPE) and is a member of the Peruvian national PGS. Janet has been involved in the development of ANPE’s PGS from the start (2005).

Marc Lewis (South Africa): Marc has been practically and academically involved in smallholder 'natural' and organic farming for the past seven years. He is currently working as a PGS consultant for the Bryanston Natural and Organic Market in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition he is completing his MPhil degree on urban and peri-urban agriculture. cramlewis@gmail.com

According to the PGS Committee Terms of Reference, the PGS Committee:
- assists the development of PGS;
- provides IFOAM with advice on how to develop, facilitate and encourage PGS around the world;
- participates in mid-term and long-term strategic planning for IFOAM’s activities on PGS and
- identifies and systematizes PGS concepts and tools appropriate for the facilitation and promotion of PGS. Members have been nominated for a 3-year term, starting August 2009. IFOAM is pleased with the geographic and professional balance of the committee and is also pleased to count 3 women on the committee.

Flávia Castro, Project Coordinator at the IFOAM Head Office: acts as the secretaryof the PGS committee. Flávia is coordinating IFOAM activities related to Projects and PGS.
